This song is unlike anything else out there which is part of the reason I’m so obsessed with it right now. Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis have been releasing music independently since 2000 and have garnered a significant following on YouTube (the video for Thift Shop alone has almost 98 million views!) The beat is crazy fresh but the lyrics are what make the song stand out as Macklemore raps about the joys of bagging bargains (or popping tags as he calls it) at thrift shops. Who would’ve thought the verse ” I’ma take your grandpa’s style, I’ma take your grandpa’s style / No for real – ask your grandpa – can I have his hand-me-downs? (Thank you)” could sound so cool? Plus he seems like an interesting guy, judging from his website (http://macklemore.com/) at least. If you haven’t seen the video or heard the song, I urge you to click below because afterwards you’ll be listening on repeat !
p.s. The featured singer on the track, Wanz (who sounds remarkably like the late rapper Nate Dogg), is a former software test engineer who had no prior major record label experience either. The future of music is definitely moving in a different direction…
Love this song! I heard it for the first time on Pandora while I was in a looooong line of Pre-blizzard shoppers. It certainly mad the time much more enjoyable.
. The video is hilarious too.
Thanks for the comment! I literally stopped what I was doing when the video went on to make sure I understood the lyrics right!!
