Splurge vs. Steal: studded skirts

While neon and flower prints  have stolen the show for S/S12, goth glam isn’t too far behind. I’ve seen studs put on just about everything to tough up a ladylike silhouette. The studded cream skirts below are the best and most wearable examples of this trend (I don’t care if crop tops are fashionable, they just look silly). The skirt on the left is a gorgeous Versace leather pencil skirt that sells on Net-a-Porter for £2,565 whereas the one on the right is a polyester/elastane version by River Island that costs £20. I understand that leather is clearly a more expensive material and this particular skirt appeared on Versace’s runway but realistically it just isn’t going to be the hardest working item in your wardrobe! The River Island version is an easy entry into the trend without spending an absolute fortune on something that won’t be worn again until next summer. Plus they don’t really look all that different!

Hot Buy of the Day: Oasis scarf collection

Inspired by Nicky Albrechtsen, costume designer and author of Scarves and the Printed Square, this limited edition collection features reworked vintage pieces all under £100. What I like most is that the color palette, consisting mainly of blues and pinks, is quite muted and the silhouette streamlined giving the clothes a timeless feel. Other High Street stores have featured the scarf print but with much louder prints (eg River Island’s wild pink & orange satin jacket) but I think Oasis has interpreted the trend just right.

Hot Buy of the Day: ModCloth dresses

I just finished reading Harper’s Bazaar (UK) magazine in which there was a feature called “The List”, otherwise known as the month’s most desirable items. Included were a pair of $740 Celine wedges, a $3,150 Louis Vuitton tote, and a $700 (!) pair of basic black Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci sandals. All perfectly lovely but sometimes you just want a pretty sundress for summer without having to take out a  mortgage! That’s where online retailer ModCloth (http://www.modcloth.com/) comes in. This amazing site features retro and vintage clothing and accessories by independent designers at reasonable prices. Best of all, they are completely plugged into the consumer via social networking sites and their own “Be the Buyer” option making the buying experience a pleasant (and even democratic) one. Here are my current favorites dresses – the peplum one is an absolute steal at under $50!

Lucky Date dress $44.99

Graceful Greenery dress $129.99

Palm of Your Hand dress $114.99

Blueberry Lemonade dress $52.99
