Tip of the day

I was reading Self magazine this afternoon which I like so much that I pay an absurd amount in order to subscribe from overseas! Anyway, there was a tip in the March issue about increasing your “me time” which I thought I’d share.

“Turn dead time lively. Make a bliss-me-quick list of things you love that take 10 minutes, tops”. The idea is to turn potentially annoying situations like waiting for someone or being stuck in traffic more pleasant. As I tend to be early for everything, this advice will come in handy! My choices: blasting my iPod with the latest Korn or Far East Movement track (“Like a G6″ is permanently imprinted in my brain!);  thinking of meal plans for the family; meditating by which I mean deep breathing because it’s hard to stay completely still while waiting at the checkout line in my local Sainsbury. You get the idea! For those of you who are high-tech, I’m sure there are lots of brainteasers and crossword puzzles on your iPhones.

If all else fails, I’ll try to imitate one of my new favorite websites THXTHXTHX where the author writes a small thank you note dedicated to whatever she’s grateful for no matter how big or small. Please check it out – it will definitely make you smile!

My Bucket List

The inspiration for this blog came from “50 things everyone must do (at least) once in a lifetime” which I just dug out from the bottom of a long-forgotten drawer.

Some are totally ridiculous like No. 46 “Poo in the bath” (my daughter did this when she was a baby – does that count?), not applicable like No. 45 “Fly on Concorde” (which I was lucky enough to do), or just not happening like No. 6 “Hold a tarantula” (really?!). In any event, I’ve decided to compose my own list starting with 10 although I reserve the right to edit the post as I think of other things!

1) Attend the Super Bowl. Hopefully this will coincide with the Giants being a participant but I’d settle for any match-up actually.

2) See the Northern Lights. Is it possible to do this without freezing my butt off?

3) Roadtrip across the USA. The closest I’ve come is the beautiful drive (highly recommended) up the California coast but it would be cool to see some states that I’ve never been to.

4) Own a Chanel purse and wear it with jeans and my favorite Converse high tops!

5) Visit Australia and New Zealand. Koalas, kangeroos, beaches – what else could you want in a destination? Maybe a shorter flight!

6) Foster a guide dog puppy. Our rented house has a no-pet policy but I’d love to help this charity out in the future. Guide Dogs home.

7) Go to the Download Festival. This is the UK’s largest gathering of metalheads. For those of you new to my blog, I wrote about my odd musical taste in the post “Strange but True”.

8 Own a valuable, museum-worthy painting . Turner? Chagall? Keep dreaming maybe :)

9) Spend a weekend at a fancy spa. This one’s self-explanatory!

10) Run my own business. After years spent working for other people, I think it’s best to be my own boss!

What I Did Today

I had one of those days that, while not the most memorable (although it did begin with a lovely coffee with my friend), managed to be extremely satisfying in its efficiency! As you know, I love a good list  so here’s what I got done.

1) Started sorting out the documents surrounding the renewal of my UK residence permit. This was admittedly no fun whatsoever but given that I won’t be able to come back into the country soon if I take a trip, I didn’t want it to slip much longer! One of the downsides of living overseas…

2) Cleaned out my Yahoo inbox so that there are now only 6 unfiled messages – the lowest in forever, thank you very much. Plus, I managed to unsubscribe to several newsletters and sites so I’m not wading through useless emails.

3) Loaded my Starbucks card on-line so I can take advantage of the free vanilla syrup :)

4) Checked the American Airlines website to determine that I only need less than 2,000 miles for a free flight to the U.S. (or a few upgrades for Sophia and I – can’t decide yet)

5) Organized my desk, including the drawers, so that I have a clean workspace. As an added bonus, I now have a cute pink folder to house all the random pieces of paper that seem to be floating around.

Had to take a photo of my tidy desk because it won't last forever!

6) Most importantly, I came up with the idea for this blog post!

If you studied psychology in school, you may have deduced that I am firmly left-brained, which in short means that there’s a place for everything in my view. If you’re unsure where you fall, check out this fun article on the Real Simple website for tips on de-cluttering. Organizing for Your Personality | Real Simple.

Now, if only the rest of the house could be so tidy!
