How to glam up a t-shirt: Neon

I’ve just done a post on my favorite t-shirts which include some amazing printed versions but in reality, you only really need a simple white tee (like Gap’s Mason crew T pictured here) and some sparkling jewelry to make a statement. I’ve divided the items by trend and have tried to include options in several price points. When all else fails, I find that megastores like Forever 21 and Topshop are good for inexpensive layering pieces.

It’s a colorful world

As you might have noticed, the term “blue jeans” is now outdated both literally and figuratively with the rise of designer denim brands. No longer simply a wardrobe staple, jeans are often the focal point of an outfit as the sheer number of options continues to expand. For S/S’12, it’s all about color as denim comes in a riot of shades ranging from sorbet to neon. Plus, the trend won’t abate once the weather cools  so extra points for investing in Rag & Bone’s metallic legging jeans or Current/Elliott’s leopard print version. While some may cringe at the idea of wearing such a “look at me” print on their bottom half, it’s one of the easier trends to pull off as long as you choose a “skinny” cut and pair with a simple t-shirt and heels. Check out my favorite brands – J Brand and 7 for all Mankind – for inspiration as they do the best slim fitting jeans in my opinion.

Blue revolution

My favorite color is blue so unsurprisingly the Alexander Wang tote below got me very excited. Not simply because of the sporty shape although tote bags are as practical as they are fashionable this season; but rather, the color is the perfect cobalt blue. Flattering for most skin colors, cobalt is also quite versatile as it works for this season’s sporty vibe (see the rest of Wang’s collection as an example) and for more elegant occasions (e.g. Carven’s gorgeous dress). Plus if you’re going for the colorblock look, cobalt blue looks nice with yellow, orange, fuschia, and red or as an accessory paired with a monchrome outfit.  If you’re a bit shy about making such a bold statement, check out jewelry by Banana Republic and Holst + Lee for an easy color injection!
